The crime of phishing and credit card fraud is something that has the ability to compromise internet security on a world-wide level. Phishing is when criminals get unsuspecting victims to willingly give up their credit card information or other personal information that could potentially harm the person they are getting it from.
Phishing is a serious crime and unfortunately most people do not realize its happening until it is too late. Many people are fooled by phishing attempts because of the emails that are presented to them. If you are a member of an online bank and you get an email you may not remember the name of the actual email address however, you will remember the logo and other pictures that are commonly found in the email correspondence. Phishers use these pictures and logos to be overly convincing and to fool you into giving out your personal information.
Once these phishing attempts are successful and currently at least one in every five people hand over their information then these criminals can use your information for whatever they want. Credit card fraud used to involve having to actually steal your credit card but now with the internet allowing online purchases for just about anything people are able to commit credit card fraud much more freely.
Luckily banks and other organizations are growing wise to the attempts of phishing. Many of the banks and online institutions understand that credit card fraud is a growing trend online. Depending on your bank you will notice changes occurring on their websites. The banks may be leaving notes about where to report suspected phishing attempts.
It is important to remember that most banks will not ask you for your personal information in an email. This is especially true when it comes to your passwords. Most banks offer automated password information which means they never have it and should never ask for it. The may ask for updated credit card information but you are always better off by calling to make sure this information is actually needed. Phishing experts can fake a website to get your information but they have yet to bypass phone lines to intercept the calls to your bank. Calling your bank will protect you from credit card fraud.
If there is an event where you have been a victim of phishing and credit card fraud then you need to report it immediately. Many banks are coming up with anti-phishing solutions but they are new so it still happens. Tell your bank immediately as you will need to report your card as stolen and have purchases removed so you don’t end up paying for your mistake.
It’s unfortunate how easy it is for phishers to get your information. You need to examine any email with scepticism before you just give the sender whatever they want. You can also stop phishing attempts before they stop with the right anti-spam solution. Phishing is a serious form of credit card fraud however banks and government agencies are working hard to stop this and future forms of phishing.
