If you have a personal website the chances of you having a guestbook are pretty high. Many people love having a place to comment about what a great site you have or things they might like to see and chances are you love checking to see those comments. However, what would you say if I told you a lot of guestbooks are being filled with phishing attempts and spam these days?
It’s unfortunate that phishing scams are around as much as they are but what once hit email is now blasting its way through blogs and guestbooks at a surprising rate. This isn’t the most popular form of phishing mind you but it is still a threat.
You may be wondering how phishing works when it comes to guestbooks. Basically it is somewhat similar to any form of phishing. It involves a fake website and scams to get people to act and end up somewhat willingly giving their information away to an unknown source.
A prime example of guestbook phishing would be to list a website for a financial website that can give low cost loans. Once you go to the website you give your name, address, social security number, and other personal information that is then used to steal your identity.
Phishing in guestbooks and in general is such a sneaky scam that many people fall for it and they do not even realize they have until they are stuck paying the price.
With this in mind the best thing you can do is be very careful about what you believe on guestbooks or in your email inbox. If you look at everything with a more sceptical eye then it will be harder for you to become a phishing victim.
If you are visiting a website or you are at your own and you see someone advertising another site you should request it being removed. If you own a personal website there is no need for a loan site to sign your guestbook. Having that in mind it is safe to say that this could be a phishing attempt. You are better off protecting yourself and others and removing the possible problem.
Phishing is something that has the ability to be a problem for anyone that has an internet connection. The good news is that with a little common sense, a keen eye, and the right protection software you will be more than able to protect yourself and all the visitors that are coming to your guestbooks.
